Great Canal Journeys

Continuing First aired 10/Mar/2014 United Kingdom English 15 season(s) 55 episode(s)
To celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales embark on four spectacular canal journeys, sharing a passion that they've enjoyed for decades. To start the series, Tim and Pru revisit the Kennet and Avon Canal in the West Country. Back in 1990, to promote the fully restored canal, Tim and Pru were invited to be the first boat in 42 years to travel the full length of the K&A. Almost a quarter of a century later, they navigate the 21 miles along its most picturesque stretch, starting in Bath and ending in Devizes.

A look back at Timothy West and Prunella Scales' travels in Sweden, where they finally fulfilled their lifetime ambitions of crossing the country coast-to-coast by boat. The 350-mile journey takes in the mighty Göta Canal, Sweden's three biggest lakes, the islands of the Swedish Archipelago, and the Baltic sea - a huge challenge for any sailor let alone two octogenarians more used to the Kennet and Avon Canal. Even the relaxation is testing - a Swedish sauna with an icy plunge into the waters of the canal, but the long tranquil summer days, island-dotted lakes, and woodland glades make it Tim's favourite-ever trip.
