Street savvy Assistant DA Catherine Chandler hails from a rich family and works for her father’s law firm. After leaving a party early, she’s mistaken for someone else and is pulled into a van full of thugs. They slash her face and beat her up, then push her out of the van, leaving her for dead. A shadowy figure appears and carries her to secret set of forgotten tunnels below the city.

A subway slasher that kills with claws and leaves the victims looking as if they were mauled by a bear is on the prowl. When Catherine learns about the case, she starts to suspect Vincent, as she remembers how he rescued her from the attackers in the safe house.

Vincent helps the residents of an apartment building defend themselves from thugs trying to chase them out so the building can be torn down—unaware the mastermind is Elliot Burch, a megabucks developer courting Catherine.

After enjoying a park performance of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony joyously with Catherine, Vincent discovers Rollie, a former resident of 'The World Below', once a gifted pianist who played the classics stunningly by ear, but now a drug addict struggling to survive in the city. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn Rollie feels responsible for the death of a helper who taught him to read music.

Catherine longs for Vincent to escort her to a secret hidden, childhood place in Connecticut. Yet Vincent realizes that there is too much danger if he were to venture above. He then begins having visions of an angel who takes him on a journey of what life would have been like if he had never existed with one of them having involved Paracelsus successfully taking over 'The World Below'.

Vincent rescues sailor Dimitri Benko from drowning and brings him to 'The World Below' to recuperate. Little does anyone know, Dimitri is carrying the pneumonic plague which soon becomes an epidemic amongst the residents of the tunnels and begins taking lives. Meanwhile, Catherine discovers that Dr. Peter Alcroft is an old friend of Father when it comes to helping the infected.

After recovering from his violent madness, Vincent finds himself unable to sense when Catherine is in danger. When an explosion lands Joe in the hospital, Catherine learns that she is pregnant and ends up captured by a crime syndicate led by a shadowy figure. Six months later, Vincent, Joe, and Elliot each continue searching for Catherine. D.A. John Moreno suspends Joe suspiciously, leaving Joe to continue on his own.

As Catherine's pregnancy begins its final phase, Vincent detects his child's presence, which leads him to the dying Catherine—injected with a fatal drug dose—and a skyscraper roof where the crime syndicate's leader Gabriel escapes by helicopter with Vincent's newborn son.

Vincent takes Catherine from the rooftop back to her apartment. He lays her on her bed. He stays with her until the morning just watching over her. The D.A. finally finds her body. They begin to investigate not only who killed her but also who brought her back to her apartment. Vincent begins the search for his son.

Vincent and Cat’s wedded bliss comes to a halt when they learn from J.T. that someone is trying to expose the identities of beasts. While on the hunt to find out who is behind the threat, Tess is reluctant to help since they are all trying to move forward with an attempt at normal lives.

As Cat and Vincent hunt for a black market buyer searching for beasts, they have to protect an heiress whose identity was exposed. Cat and Vincent realize how much they have to lose if Vincent's true identity is revealed.

While attempting to be normal newlyweds, Cat and Vincent grapple with how to overcome the danger lurking. They find themselves in the fight of their lives when their happiness becomes jeopardized.
