24 Hours in A&E is one of Channel 4's groundbreaking and critically acclaimed programmes. This documentary takes a look behind the scenes at how this large-scale production is made through every stage of the process. It asks why King's College Hospital allowed the cameras in, what impact the series has had on the hospital staff, and why the public agree to be filmed. Unlike most documentaries, the series captures life in the Emergency Department using what's called a 'fixed rig'. This programme captures the rig being set up, as 92 remotely-operated cameras, 100 microphones and 16 miles of wiring are installed in the department by technicians. The programme shows how the crew of 170 - an unprecedented number for a documentary - is assembled and trained. The team work on site for six weeks of non-stop round-the-clock filming, handling 8000 hours of footage to make 28 episodes of the series, which is broadcast in 54 countries.

A woman with a weak immune system owing to the radiotherapy she underwent for breast cancer is bitten by her cat, a minor injury that could cause her serious problems. A 72-year-old with terminal cancer is brought in with breathing difficulties and a decision must be made about whether to resuscitate her if her condition worsens. 20-year-old Thomassine has hurt her ankle on her first day skateboarding. Neil, 39, is flown in by helicopter after a head-on road collision while driving his friend's sports car. Matias, who is 34, needs help after trapping his hands in a train door and being dragged along the platform.

Pauline, 70, is brought to A&E with two broken legs after being hit by a car that swerved off the road. 11-year-old Scarlett has been knocked down by a car travelling 30 mph at a zebra crossing. Steve, who is 48, has been transferred from Kent, after blacking out and crashing while driving at 70 mph on a motorway.

19-month-old baby Xah'nae has been vomiting, is suffering with a high fever and has become floppy and unresponsive. 52-year-old Graham, who has Down's syndrome and dementia, hit his head when he fell over in his bathroom. Christine, 61, has been rushed to A&E after collapsing unconscious at her sister's house.

Bill, 92, has a swollen leg and is struggling to breathe. Andy, 45, has stomach cramps.

2-year-old Cydney's parents have brought her into King's as she hasn't passed urine for two days. Dilson, 33, is rushed in suffering with severe knife wounds after being stabbed in the head and neck as he attempted to stop a fight outside a nightclub. 79-year-old Doreen has had a fall at home and injured her wrist.

Pat, who is 71 and has a history of brain haemorrhages, is brought in after being found unconscious at home. 63-year-old Mick was found lying in the street with severe head injuries. Graham, 50, is rushed to King's after having a suspected heart attack. Chris, 21, has chest pains and has been coughing up blood.

Alyce, who is 89, is brought to King's after falling near her home. Sean, who is 23, is rushed in after having a seizure that lasted most of the night.

Four-year-old Alfie is brought into the hospital with a broken thighbone having fallen off his bike. The team are worried that Alfie might have ruptured an artery, causing some internal bleeding.

72-year-old Laura has come to King's after suffering a suspected stroke. Nic, who is 47 and the UK's over-40s BMX champion, visits A&E after falling 20 feet when a stunt went wrong. Marjorie, 83, has pain behind her eye following a recent bout of shingles.

Brian, who is 74 and has dementia, is taken to King's by ambulance after falling down a flight of stairs.

At St George's in south west London, the trauma team fight to save the life of a young woman after a motorbike accident. Luke, who is 11, is brought in after having a seizure.

Dave, 53, has crashed into a stationary car while riding his bicycle, and has a significant facial injury. 30-year-old Richard has come into A&E after dislocating his thumb while cycling. Billy, a 19-year-old motocross rider, has been thrown off his bike during a race and suffered multiple spinal fractures.

Paul, who is 38 and a tree surgeon, is rushed into resus after falling 25 feet from a tree. Anthony, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's and prostate cancer, has fallen down some stairs.

Will, 13, gets a CT scan for head injuries sustained in a baseball accident. Baby Amira has an irregular heartbeat. Chris, who is 21 and a pizza delivery rider, has been knocked off his motorbike.

Carole, 45, is brought to A&E after experiencing chest pains and collapsing. Dinner lady Collette has cut her finger while chopping vegetables. Lucy, who is 25 and has intercranial hypertension, is suffering from a severe headache. Philip, who is 53, is rushed in following a seizure, and doctors suspect he may have had a stroke.

Mike, who is 54 and has epilepsy, arrives in minors with a bandage around his jaw after falling face-first onto the pavement. Mel, 71, is rushed to St George's after being accidentally knocked down and run over by her husband while helping him park the car. 68-year-old Bonnie has hit her head on a bedside table. Maddi, who is 4 and has previously had complex neck surgery, has fallen over on a train.

Mark, who is 52, is rushed to St George's by air after a road traffic collision threw him from his motorbike and left him suffering a cardiac arrest. Kayley, 25, has fallen from her horse and doctors worry she's dislocated her hip.

80-year-old Frances is rushed to St George's by air ambulance after falling backwards into her empty swimming pool. Ruth, 86, is rushed in with her heart beating three times the normal rate. Jerry, who is 20, has crashed her car coming back from a party at 5am.

17-year-old Shea has serious stab wounds and is sent to a high dependency unit. Bob, also 17, arrives after impaling his leg on a fence while taking a shortcut home from his school. 33-year-old James is brought in by ambulance after fainting at home.

Judith, who is 79, is airlifted to St George's after being involved in a road traffic collision. Mohammad, 80, has fallen at home while celebrating Eid.

Lewis, who is 18, has come off a motorbike and collided with two cars. Sam, 27, fainted and cut his lips while smoking a Cuban cigar at a barbecue.

An unknown patient arrives after collapsing and falling face first in the street. 29-year-old Rick comes to minors after an accident at the gym. Marigold, 3, has signs of a chest infection.

Marie, who is 31, arrives in A&E by ambulance after collapsing at home with an unexplained headache. 10-month-old Erin has a build-up of wax in her ears following a cold and fever. Eileen, 87, comes in with shortness of breath and a high heart rate.

This shocking episode follows three middle-aged women who are stabbed in broad daylight in a random attack at a supermarket car park in Surrey. Jean, who's 67, had gone to Sainsbury's to get macaroni cheese for her grandson and was stabbed in the back while carrying shopping to her car. Doctors are worried that the wound may have hit a vital organ or a major vessel and she's sent for urgent CT scans. Meanwhile, her daughter Clair recalls growing up in a pub in Fulham where her mum was the landlady: 'I remember a couple of guys came in with machetes yelling and shouting and she gave them a jolly good talking to... she's always been feisty... she can throw someone on the floor if she needs to'. Rani, who's 71, was stabbed twice in the back while waiting for a bus.

Maria, who is 52, suffers from MS and has been brought to resus with suspected sepsis. 6-year-old Grace has tissue stuck in her ear. Eve, 83, has fallen down the stairs to her basement.

Megan, 20, is rushed to St George's after being involved in a high-speed car crash. 40-year-old Jibraeel has a cotton bud stuck in his ear. James, who is 78, has suspected internal bleeding.

Tony, 48, and his father have been in a motorbike crash. Alison has a broken leg from a horse riding accident. Harry, who is 12, has been in a 10-bike pile-up at a velodrome.

Rich has been in a high speed car crash and cannot move his legs. Justin has a potentially life-threatening bleed on his brain following a football accident.
