Only 120 amateur cooks are selected from more than 6000 hopefuls. After tasting their dishes, the judges will hand out only 50 aprons.

"Thousands of home cooks from across South Africa lined up in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg to audition in the "Cold Dish Auditions" and in tonight's launch episode the 100 top cooks from those auditions travel to the Shine Studios in Johannesburg's trendy new food neighborhood in Braamfontein to showcase their skills in the all-important "Hot Audition"."

"With more than half of the 50 aprons for Boot Camp already handed out in the first episode, tonight the remaining contestants each get 45 minutes in the kitchen to prepare and only 10 minutes to finish off a dish in front of the judges that they hope will be good enough to get them into Boot Camp."

Chefs Zola Nene and Gregory Czarnecki and food editor Justine Drake judge the culinary skills of the contestants competing for the cash prize and coveted title.

In this episode the contestants are tasked with cooking a dish personal to the judges and a technical challenge.

The episode centers on a challenge to "put themselves on a plate," where contestants had to create an elevated dish based on a childhood memory triggered by a photograph found in their Mystery Boxes.

A Mystery Box Challenge where the remaining 18 contestants must create a dish using the "humble ingredient of an apple". Contestants are tasked with thinking of the "apple of their eye"—someone special in their lives—to inspire their dish. The winner of the challenge receives immunity from the following week's elimination and gets to watch from the gantry.

Each of the 20 contestants opens a mystery box to find a photograph from their childhood. They must create and "elevate" a dish inspired by that specific childhood memory to a MasterChef standard.
