Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin

This episode is a special presentation of Ocean Mysteries--the story of the making of AT&T Dolphin Tales at Georgia Aquarium. Each week on Ocean Mysteries, we introduce you to some of the most compelling animals on Earth--like whale sharks, sea otters, manta rays and beluga whales--all of whom have a home at Georgia Aquarium. But while the team at the Aquarium loves and cares deeply for all of our animals, they know there is something about bottlenose dolphins which captures the imagination, minds and hearts of people all over the world. That's why Georgia Aquarium mounted a project unprecedented in scale and ambition--a massive expansion with nearly two million gallons of man-made salt water, which features viewing windows, education stations, and even a live performance staged above--and below--the surface of the water, created to educate our guests about the beauty, majesty and agility of these amazing animals. To pull this off, hundreds of men and women worked for nearly three years, battling deadlines, twists and turns that would rival the drama of the show itself.

In our first episode, host Jeff Corwin tracks the stealthy, awe-inspiring manta ray. Amazingly, not much is known about where they go or what they do. Georgia Aquarium is on the cutting edge of research and has developed ground-breaking satellite technology to track the manta's migratory patterns. Jeff and a team of experts race to find and tag mantas in the open water in hopes of uncovering some of the unanswered questions about this mysterious animal.

In our second episode, host Jeff Corwin ventures deep into the wetlands where there lives a predator that is both the designer and keeper of its environment. It is the great American Alligator. Join Jeff as he explores the Albino Alligator and its key characteristics at the Georgia Aquarium and then ventures out to the Everglades to observe the alligator in its natural habitat. He'll get hands-on with these amazing creatures that are a part of our national heritage.

Animals are genetically designed to care for their young and generally make good parents. But sometimes, they are not destined to stay and care for their offspring, and the little ones become animal orphans. One such orphan is Murphy, a loggerhead sea turtle rescued by the Georgia Aquarium. This is the story of Murphy and his journey from rescue, to rehabilitation, and finally to release back into the wild.

Jeff joins scientists and volunteers from Harbor Branch at Florida Atlantic University's Health and Environmental Risk Assessment team to study Atlantic bottlenose dolphin health in Florida's Indian River Lagoon and uncover why these animals are the sentinels for the entire ecosystem. In the process Jeff helps researchers carefully locate and lift dolphins out of the water and onto a research boat for observation and assessment!

Jeff explores Aialik Glacier and visits the Alaska SeaLife Center, where he meets an orphaned harbor seal named Ali. Jeff helps the ASLC staff nurse Ali back to health and prepare for Ali's release back to the wild. Along the way, Jeff learns about other seals at the facility, including one named Atty, who is pregnant with her second pup!

Jeff teams up with the Alaska SeaLife Center to uncover the reasons behind the decline of some Steller sea lion populations. Jeff travels to remote Grotto Island to witness sea lions in their natural habitat. Jeff also meets a two thousand pound sea lion named Woody, and learns about the breeding program at the ASLC.

Jeff travels to Laguna Beach, California to uncover the secrets behind a marine mammal disaster.

Jeff travels to the far side of the globe to witness the amazing families of New Zealand such as sea lions, Takhae Birds, and a colony of baby blue-eyed penguins. Their dedicated parents that help them grow for wildlife survival.

Jeff experiences an exploration of his native New England coastline and some of the amazing animals that make this region so special.

Jeff takes his two young daughters on an exploration of the Georgia Aquarium. They meet African penguins, check on the health of bottle-nose dolphins, and feed three ton whale sharks.

Jeff travels to Trowunna Wildlife Park in Tasmania to uncover the ancient secrets of this Australian island which separates from the larger mainland.

Jeff joins a team of marine biologists racing to rescue the magnificent whales of the Hawaiian Islands.
