The Restaurant

Stockholm, The Day of Peace, 1945. A spontanious kiss between two strangers in the crowd at Kungsgatan will lead up to big consequences. The war has affected the business at restaurant Djurgårdskällaren, driven by the Löwander family. The son, Gustaf, finds a risky way to solve the restaurants economical problems. The sister, Nina, arranges a peace banquet that will determine her future. Chef Backe makes life hard for the new scullion Calle Svensson.

Peter Löwander comes home from the preparedness and has a jewish refugee with him, Suzanne Goldstein. Helga, the head of the family, dissaproves but remains silent. Nina's and Calle's roads are crossed once again. Gustaf covers up the restaurants catastrophal economi and shallow dealings, but the brother, Peter, starts to understand that something is wrong.

Gustaf and Helga arranges a 50 year anniversary at Djurgårdskällaren to speed up the business. But Nina has another solution. She defies her brother and starts jazz evenings in the banquet hall. Peter confronts Gustaf about the restaurants catastrophic economi. Nina and Calle are dating in secret. Nina is annoyed when Calle gets in a fight with one of her friends.

Stockholm, december 1955. Restaurant DK goes amazing and everything should be alright, but the Löwander family is divided. After a traumatical occurrance the matriarch Helga makes a new attempt to unite the family. Will Gustaf take the extended hand? Peter's wife Ester tries to increase dissatisfaction between the siblings Peter and Nina. Nina gives Calle an anticipated christmas gift, and Maggan gets an unwelcomed visit from the past...

Helga, Peter and Nina tries to convince Gustaf to not sell his part of DK to Henriette Winter. Gustaf reflects of investing all of his assets on Oscarshof - but can he trust his partner? Nina has had several of miscarriages and both she and Calle worries for it to happen again. Chef Backe tries a hearing aid, but is it enough to get back the hold of the kitchen staff? The Italian youth Angelo starts in the washing up and gets to work hard.

1956, Henriette Winter is the new copartner of DK. Peter and Ester are working on solutions to get rid of her. Gustaf takes up the fight against DK with his new restaurant Oscarshof. Nina and Calle are searching for the right moment to tell Helga she is going to be a grandmother. Chef Backe are getting more and more paranoid, which goes out beyond Calle. Angelo is in the claws of Ragnarsson, but gets help from Maggan.

Stockholm in May 1968. Nina and her daughter Christina prepare for the grand opening of the nightclub "Nina's". Peter and Ester, who run the nightclub Royal, feel threatened by the new competition. Christina tries to invite Calle to the opening. Calle has not seen or had any contact with Christina and Nina for many years. At the student union, Christina meets Maggan's son Uno and they both start socialising with the charismatic leftist student John Hansen. Maggan, now the Social Citizens Council, runs into an old friend.

Nina suspects Ester and Peter of being involved in the tear gas attack against Nina's nightclub. Nina's head chef has resigned and the kitchen staff are struggling. Gustaf try to persuade Nina to ask Calle to come back as head chef. Lilly talks Maggan into coming with her to an illegal gay club.

Calle is new head chef at Nina's and works to renew the menu. Meanwhile, Ester and Mirko make another attempt at sabotage. John and the leftist gang discover a new way to fund their business, upsetting Christina when she discovers the truth. John has begun to suspect that Uno is passing information to the secret police. The newspapers have found out that Maggan has visited an illegal gay club and the media hunt is fierce. Angelo gets a business idea.

As the Löwander family is preparing to open their restaurant, Nina meets Calle again for the first time since she tried to take her own life.

Peter and the other staff prepare the midsummer celebration at the summer restaurant. Nina and Calle are colleagues but, beneath the surface, deeper feelings burn.

Nina visits Erik and Christina in Skåne, but it’s not a harmonious reunion. Helga suspects that something happened between Nina and Calle on Midsummer's Eve.
