Episode 2 Set in 1914, sisters Katya and Dasha navigate love and betrayal amid the changing spirit of St. Petersburg. Dasha studies law, becomes entangled with poet Bessonov, and meets engineer Telegin. Katya admits her infidelity to her husband and leaves for France. As war breaks out, Dasha works in a hospital and learns that Telegin has gone missing. |

Episode 3 Bessonov has recovered at Hannah's farmhouse, where Hannah is alone following the death of her son and her husband. Bessonov writes a poem for Hannah, but she confesses that she cannot read. He reads the poem to her, and they share an emotional embrace. An armed soldier enters the house and sees them. It is Hannah's husband, very much alive. In St. Petersburg Vadim and Katya are married. Dasha is very pregnant and waits for Telegin, who is working. Impatiently, she decides to go out and walk to meet him. The temperature is freezing and the streets are dangerous and her impulsiveness leads to tragedy. |
