For Sister Benita Wainwright, Dr Julian Humphrey and the rest of the casualty staff, Christmas is a time of mixed emotions, and they go above and beyond to try and make their patients feel as happy as possible during the festive period

Severe weather conditions place the casualty department under even more pressure than usual. Dr Julian and his sidekick Sister Benita treat a pensioner with a broken ankle and a former miner with a chronic lung condition. Meanwhile, Dr Jane treats four-year-old Teddy after a sledging accident.

Staffing problems hit the department as several nurses call in sick. The remaining team are forced to juggle extra patients to make sure every emergency is dealt with. The pressure takes its toll on Sister Benita, and she is herself admitted to a bay for treatment.

The team are facing one of the busiest days in Barnsley Casualty's history, and the pressure mounts on staff members as patients await beds to become available, so self-named Emergency Clown Sister Jane helps to give the younger nurses a moral boost during this difficult period. Meanwhile, consultant doctor Jane treats 10-year-old Oliver, who suffers from a rare condition called Angelman Syndrome.

Barnsley Hospital treats the largest number of patients in a single shift in its history, including a man being rushed in with a suspected brain injury. Health care assistant Sharon Bailey and volunteer Jane Allen try to keep their colleagues' spirits up with tea and cake, while a nine-year-old girl in the paediatric triage area does not want to stay overnight and a strange smell emerges from the lost property box.

A critically ill patient is brought into the emergency department after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest whilst in a local cafe with his wife. Meanwhile, doctor Bharath Reddy treats Maxine, who broke her wrist when she slipped de-icing the car, and another patient is treated after fracturing her shoulder.

This time, paediatric sister Jemma Wray treats two critically ill children - ten-year-old Kai has been having seizures, and 18-month-old Joel is struggling to breathe. Elsewhere, nurse Will Gibbons looks after a 28-year-old patient who has been in a motorbike accident, and 51-year-old Andrew comes into the hospital after damaging his fingers with a circular saw.

In the first of a new series, doctor Sue Mason and Sister Benita Wainwright prepare resus for Rory, a 56-year-old patient who has been found unconscious at home. Elsewhere, doctor George Kay treats 85-year-old Pearl, who is struggling for breath and has a racing heart, and 10-year-old Koby arrives in the hospital after chopping off the tip of his finger.

One of the department's new junior doctors treats a man with a suspected case of sepsis, that has been triggered by the tracheostomy tube he relies on to breathe. An 84-year-old woman is brought in by ambulance after falling down a flight of stairs and undergoes multiple x-rays to check for broken bones, while a 12-month-old baby needs treatment after having a fit.

There are complications when a woman who suffers from kidney failure is admitted with a heart condition, and two builders are rushed into casualty after a roof collapsed under them. Meanwhile, a 65-year-old Alan goes for a CT scan after an epileptic fit left him with a serious head wound, and doctors treat a 12-year-old boy who has been attacked by a dog.

Junior doctor Patrick's shift starts with an elderly man with a suspected heart attack. John checks over a young man who fell six feet on to concrete. An 81-year-old has accidentally taken double the dose of medication he should have.

A 2-year-old girl is brought in while she deals with dangerously low blood sugar levels and 88-year-old former merchant navy man Bill has heart and breathing problems. Junior doctor Alex Chatburn has his own views on emergency admissions.

Barnsley Hospital's A&E department struggles with too many patients and not enough room for them as they work to treat internal chest wounds, a collapsed lung and a back injury.

There is a spike in Covid-19 cases at Barnsley Casualty and with positive cases flooding in, pressure mounts. Fifty-year-old Richard is rushed in with severe burns across one side of his body.

Meanwhile, a 74-year-old woman needs an emergency procedure after having a fall at home, and a nine-year-old girl has an X-Ray on her hand to check for any signs of a break

The waiting room in Barnsley Casualty is overflowing today: Resus is crowded and there are no spare beds in the hospital. Sister Jane, who’s running the hub, will have to juggle patients to make room for new emergencies.

Patients include 87-year-old Ralph, who is struggling to breathe, Sallie, an 83-year-old rushed in after having a fall, and Karina who's dislocated her shoulder for the fifth time.

Life in the A&E department of Barnsley Hospital. In reception, a 64-year-old man has collapsed and lost consciousness. The casualty team believe he has had a heart attack and they need to get him to resus immediately. While they battle to save his life, another emergency is on the way - a 21-year-old who is struggling to breathe and needs urgent medical attention.

Ninety-three-year-old Eileen has had a bad fall, leaving her bleeding from a wound on her head. She's taken through to an available space in resus where paramedics handover to Dr Joshua Wren. In paediatrics, Andy brings in 11-year-old daughter Jessica who has broken her arm. She is administered pain relief while emergency nurse practitioner Tony prepares a cast for her arm.

A seizure in the waiting room sends 34-year-old Lisa to resus, while Michael, a former stone mason, battles a life-threatening lung infection. Deborah arrives with a head wound after being trampled by a horse, needing urgent scans, and Doreen, confused and battling bladder cancer, shows signs of infection.
