The Simple Life

"The Can Opener" is a season special episode from the reality television show, Simple Life (2003). In the episode, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie find themselves living with the Leding family in Altus, Arkansas. During their stay, the girls are tasked with various household chores, one of which includes using a manual can opener to open cans of food for dinner. The episode highlights the stark difference between the pampered lives of the celebrities and the simpler, more rural lifestyle of the Ledings. It aired during the Billboard Music Awards in December, 2004.

The girls move into the farm where we meet their hosts, the Ledding family. They freak out over chicken plucking and the enormous tick in their bedroom overtop a well. The dad lays down the rules but when have the Hiltons ever obeyed them? And both girls decide the oldest son deserves a little reminder of this trip.....

With the patient help of their "husband" and Americanized fifteen-year-old "son," the girls manage to dress, speak and dance like conservative Pakistani housewives...or at least their version of it. But things don't go as well when Paris and Nicole decide to share their experiences, namely how they like to party.

The girls' "husband for a day" bends over backward as he tries to teach them how a relationship works, but commitment just doesn't come easily for Paris and Nicole. To show this couple how they would keep the spark alive, Paris gets wild 'n' wet on a golf course, and Nicole brings blindfolds, tequila and an erotic photo shoot into the mix. It's safe to say this host couple may never be the same.

Paris and Nicole are finally back together after their long fight and Malibu's Camp Shawnee gets the pleasure of meeting them. Paris and Nicole are introduced to the campers interested in losing weight. The girls try and help the hungry campers by retrieving their junk food.

Paris and Nicole try to help the campers of Camp Shawnee get into shape. They show the female campers how to loose weight 'their' way and the girl and boy campers go into competition on who can loose the most weight. Nicole gives Hunter tips on impressing Paris. Hunter later finds out that Paris doesn't impress easily.

Paris and Nicole cause mischief when they try to council a group of girls and their moms for a pageant. Paris helps Joey, the camp directors son with his first date. Nicole has to break the news to Hunter that Paris only likes him as a friend.
