""Keep your hand's off him and we'll be friends"" The new constable Maggie Doyle arrives in Mt. Thomas. She is faced with not only rampant chauvinism but the fact that she is stationed with ex-boyfriend Constable Wayne Patterson who has recently moved there with his wife Roz. Local girl Sally-Anne is raped by her boyfriend Bruce McLaren. She makes a formal complaint but when Bruce pressures her she attempts to withdraw it. When Sally-Anne discovers that this isn't possible she tries to commit suicide. Maggie and Nick find her and revive her. Maggie and Wayne go to speak to farmer Mick Doherty about his parking fines. When his dog breaks it's chains Maggie shoots her. Mick then starts firing at them. Tom is forced to go out and have a ""yarn"" with Mick and with the help of PJ gets Mick a new dog.

""Madam, this is not the local beauty palour, its the police station"" Local farmer, Bob Crowley, is due to have his harvester repossessed. When Nick and Maggie escort the repo agent, Mr. Miller, to the farm arrive it's been stolen. There is lots of finger pointing. Later that day Miller and his mates beat up Crowley. Maggie has a word to Bob's daughter Grace. Turns out that Grace and her boyfriend had ""hidden"" the harvester so that her father could collect the insurance so he wouldn't lose the farm. Needless-to-say she is charged. Meanwhile local handyman, David Tufnel is found dead. Wayne learns the hard way that whoever signs the body over to the morgue has to assist with the autopsy. On the personal front, Roz is trying to establish a beauty parlour at the watch-keepers house. Wayne doesn't get around to asking Tom for permission and when women start ringing the station for facials Roz is found out. Tom spits the dummy and closes her down before she really starts.

""But if I had locked him up he would still be alive"" Maggie meets local school teacher Brian Shields and his wife. Shields is very anti-guns having been to Vietnam. He gets into a minor prang with some city duck-shooters and goes berserk and shoots a gun in the street. Tom agrees to let him go if he promises to stay out of trouble. PJ writes shields off as a wacko but Maggie feels there is something more to it. When Shields is found dead the next day, the finger is pointed at the duck-shooters. When pressed by PJ the wife admits that her husband committed suicide as he had terminal cancer using a gun to highlight the danger of guns. PJ is not convinced but soon the media take over and join the wife's side. Finally Maggie gets some circumstantial evidence that the wife killed her husband but it's too late as she is now the media darling and they could never make it stick. Meanwhile Roz has brought herself a car to start a mobile salon and cannot meet her obligations to clean the station

When a middle-aged couple disappear from their farm, the Blue Heelers are shocked when they find out what actually happened.

Maggie and Adam must deal with a crazed nightclub bouncer whose confrontation with a footballer results in a brawl.

The town's first bank robbery puzzles the police and leads to an unexpected suspect.

Bush fires are ringing the township of Mount Thomas and Maggie and Wayne are out evacuating farm houses in the path of the inferno, but this routine job suddenly turns dangerous when they are confronted by a masked man brandishing a shotgun. Maggie and Wayne overcome the offender and take him into custody. Back at the station he is quickly identified as one of three bandits who held up St. David's bank the previous day. The prisoner proves to be uncooperative. He refuses to give his name or those of his accomplices and in an unguarded moment, he swallows a handful of thumbtacks. Although Mt. Thomas Hospital is presently under renovations, there is still a skeleton staff there and the bandit is rushed into emergency surgery under the care of Dr. Zoe Hamilton. Wayne is duped into giving up his gun and uniform by one of the bandits posing as a hostage. Maggie goes to the hospital to discover someone else dressed in Wayne's clothes. She plays it cool and attempts to put a call through to t

A siege has developed at the Mt. Thomas hospital. While the armed and desperate Nerida Davidson and Jason Bennett hold Maggie and Wayne on the inside, the rest of the Heelers lay in wait on the outside of the building. Meanwhile, bushfires ring the township making outside help a forlorn hope. The bandits' objective is to get their compatriot, Matt, out of the hospital and away, but this is not made any easier by his gradually worsening medical condition. When captured, Matt swallowed a handful of map pins in order to get to the hospital, a soft target from which he could be more easily rescued. The situation is further complicated by the presence of mother-to-be Augusta Torrini and her emotional, hot-blooded husband, Sergio. When Wayne bravely tries to overcome the bandits he ends up pistol whipped and chained to a hospital bed. The words Japanese Encephalitis strike fear into the heart of PJ. It's fatal, there's no cure, and it seems to be the cause of Maggie's illness. But PJ won't give up. Now the task is to prove the doctors wrong, to find a viable alternative and breath new life into his beloved Maggie. Nick's reign as acting sergeant is rapidly turning into a nightmare as he deals with Keith Purvis and a mob of panic-stricken farmers. Having decided the spate of deaths had been caused by rabies, they slate the responsibility home to a couple of English migrants and their young daughter. Nick fulfils a promise to the girl and takes the dog into protective custody. However, the farmers follow them into town and Nick soon finds the station cut off from the outside world with a highly agitated farmer, the girl, her mother and their dog. Dash discovers that her penchant for gossip may very well get her, and other people into hot water when she and Adam, overhear the Shire President, Roger Payne, having lunch with a woman who is definitely not his wife. While out on a surveillance operation to catch an extortionist who's been threatening to blow up a restaurant, the pair, bored with three days of sitting in the car with nothing to do except listen, finally hear something interesting. Unfortunately, while Adam and Dash are preoccupied, the real extortionists manage to get away, much to PJ's chagrin. PJ appeals to Tom to hold the investigation over longer, but the matter is out of Tom's hands-the surveillance equipment and manpower belong to another unit and he can't retain them without very good reason. PJ's worried-he's given his word that he'd solve the case, to Bluey, the frightened restaurateur, and now he may not be able to keep it. Dash is still obsessed with finding out who the mystery woman is, but is thwarted

Mt. Thomas station is full of secrets. Maggie and PJ have come back from holidays deeply in love but determined that no one, especially Tom, will find out about their new relationship. Meanwhile, Nick and Adam have intercepted Dash's Confirmation Certificate as a fully-fledged constable in order to have it framed for a special presentation, and Tom and Chris are conspiring to organise a surprise celebration for Dash's 20th birthday. Into this web of intrigue comes a very distressed Elly Winslow, asking for police protection because her ex-husband, Danny Hobson, has just been released from prison in Queensland where he was serving time for sexually molesting his own son, and she is terrified that he will come looking for them.

Dash is somewhere out there in a bus with a group of school children, their teacher and an armed gunman, and the Heelers are feeling especially bad about it because they led Dash to believe that they've forgotten her birthday. When the bus is found abandoned, the Heelers must decipher both true and false clues in order to find the missing children.

Adam's mate, Wazza Tully, is in trouble; Mandy Barnes wants him charged with sexual assault after an incident at the Imperial where a drunken Wazza tried to grabs her breasts. Tom sends Adam to ""have a few words"" with his mate and warn him to stay off the grog - especially at the footy club fund-raising function tonight. The function features Justin de Carlo, an illusionist and stage hypnotist. All the Heelers are there, and some of them even find themselves up on stage as volunteers, as does Wazza. But when Justin suggests that his hypnotised volunteers go and kiss the person they fancy the most in the room, the whole town is astounded when Wazza heads straight for Adam and kisses him full on the lips! Although Tom is inclined to play down the situation the following morning, believing the less fuss the sooner it will be forgotten, Wazza demands police action, convinced that he has been tricked and defamed.

Adam has left the force, and Mt. Thomas, and Probationary Constable Jack Lawson has barely arrived in Mt. Thomas before he is in trouble with the police. Jack's misdemeanours are small ones and quickly forgiven as his unassuming charm disarms Maggie and Dash. Even Tom can't find fault with the new recruit, whose initiative and enthusiasm for menial tasks prove an immediate asset. But Jack's sunny welcome to Mt. Thomas is clouded by a report of sexual assault at the local retirement home. This one requires a woman's touch. Maggie and Dash visit the home to discover the alleged victim is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. She claims her assailant is the devil. Maggie is not prepared to dismiss the report and neither is Dash, who finds the devil alive and well in the Mt. Thomas video store in the form of a plastic mask. After her attack, Maggie refuses to play victim as PJ and Ben battle to unmask the devil. Maggie recovers from the assault by the devil who has the women of Mt. Thomas terrified. Always the copper, Maggie refuses to be treated like a victim but she's got her work cut out for her with PJ and Ben fighting to protect this reluctant damsel in distress. PJ and Ben's theory on a prime suspect collapses when a witness leads them to the local reverend who runs a group for troubled men. They are certain he is protecting one of them. But when Maggie receives a threatening tape and pornographic magazines are found in the reverend's car, the Heelers drag in the man of the cloth to air his dirty laundry. Media reports whip the town into a frenzy. Anxiety turns to anger when the Heelers release their prime suspect, then the mother of the young victim takes matters into her own hands and shadows the Heelers, looking for clues to nail the suspect. After the torching of her house, she seeks safety elsewhere and knows that it can only be through the witness protection program. But when her pick-up arrives, Maggie learns that her father has been abducted and her plans to reach safety are in jeopardy. When Maggie is shot by a mysterious assailant, PJ collapses in shock

PJ's frustration mounts when all the evidence of Maggie's murder points to him. He throws himself into the investigation but there is confusion over his recall of events. PJ believes it was a contract hit but his theories don't tally with the evidence. When the murder weapon isn't found and the Heelers discover PJ's gun is missing from the safe, Homicide turns to PJ for answers.

Nothing is what it seems when a woman rushes into the Mt. Thomas police station claiming a man has kidnapped her children. As a custody battle unfolds between the feuding parents, Ben's work eerily starts to mirror his private life. Shattered by the news that his ex-wife plans on taking his kids to Perth, he is determined to go to any lengths to keep them in Victoria.

The custody battle gets out of hand when the father of the two children reappears in court with a time bomb strapped to his body and threatens to blow himself and everyone else in the courtroom. He abducts Ben and flees into the bush. Will the Heelers find them in time and can they set the children free from their irrational father?

A famous crime-fiction writer is asking a lot of questions about the death of a baby 25 years ago. When he discovers the body of a missing child, Tess wonders if he is capable of committing the very acts of violence he writes about. Tom confronts the author, who reveals his intimate connection to the long-closed case of the baby's death. How can Tess and Tom separate fact from fiction?

Tess worries for Hayley's safety when one of the girl's new friends is accused of attacking a girl at school. Tom's daughter, Susan, who has just moved back to Mt Thomas, teaches the accused boy and has faith in his innocence. When it is discovered that the boy has killed his classmate 2 years before, opinion is divided. He was too young to be charged, but could he snap again!? When the boy's father arrives in town, it sets off a chain of events that put Tom and Susan's life in danger

Tom discovers his daughter is pregnant when she becomes the victim of a hit and run. The accident leaves her unconscious and internally injured and Tom is faced with a terrible dilemma. If he saves his daughter's child he risks losing his own. Would Susan forgive him? Could Tom forgive himself? As Tom seeks justice, Tess fights for Hayley's love. Hayley's mother's prison release draws near as Tess struggles to understand why Hayley is pushing her away. Tom and Tess risk losing the people they love in their desire to protect them. At the end of the day, Tom gets to keep Susan but loses her daughter, and Tess ulitmately loses Hayley to the girl's family.

(from tv guide): Jonesy gets itchy feet when a hack wrestling troupe he once worked for comes to town. Meg, the owner, is an old flame and she makes her interest in Jonesy clear. The troupe is struggling to stay afloat and the theft of a valuable wrestling belt places their future under threat. Meg's plans for the troupe are unpopular with the older wrestlers. Did one of them steal the belt in an effort to protect their history? A pyrotechnics accident leaves one old wrestler badly burnt and Meg leans on Jonesy for support. Jonesy is disbelieving as evidence mounts against his old girlfriend. Would she risk someone's life to get her own way? Tess thinks so. As the troupe continues to splinter, Tess questions Jonesy's objectivity. Jonesy is torn when Meg asks him to leave the Force and join her and the troupe. Does he know her as well as he thought? Where is his future?

There is a total fire ban. A frustrated PJ is seduced by Jo one night, while - in the other room - Ben gets progressively drunker. Later, as Jo and PJ lie awake, they smell smoke and realise the house is on fire. After rescuing Ben, they flee. While they recover at the hospital, Jonesy arrives and tells them that all their belongings are destroyed. Ben claims an intruder knocked him out, so an arson squad is called. Meanwhile, Tess and Jonesy fight over her new marriage to Dr. Carmichael. At the remains of their house, PJ finds a photo frame with Maggie in it, and pockets it but doesn't tell Jo. The arson squad discovers that it wasn't arson but a single candelabra - exactly what Ben had going. Another fire has broken out, possibly started from the fire at PJ's The 'hero' who entered PJ's house after the fire, Wayne Bayliss, is considered a suspect, particularly when a driptorch and a scrapbook of news articles on fires is found at his home. Amongst those searching, Tess and PJ must admit their true feelings for Jonesy and Jo respectively. But even as the flames die down, there is trouble when Ben - who realises he may have caused the entire bushfire - promises that he has stopped drinking, even though it may not be true.

Sabu, the family dog of Tom's family is accused of killing livestock. Tess takes the hard line impounding the dog. As per usual Jonesy questions Tess' stance, resulting in another D & M between the lovestruck, but unattainable pair. Tess revelas that as a child she had a dog...for merely a few weeks. From all magazine accounts Jonesy fronts Tess late one night in the station a gorgeous border collie pup in his arms.

When PJ's old nemesis Luke Darcy (see season 4's ""The Civil Dead"") is freed from jail, he returns to Mount Thomas and PJ instantly believes he is bad news. After a bashing, and then the rape of Luke's own grandmother, the evidence points elswhere but PJ's suspicions - and the suspicions of Luke's cousin - lead him to force his anger onto Luke. Meanwhile, Susie and Ben - who have each spent months in therapy - talk about their issue and Susie begins to think Ben is ignoring it, rather than confronting his feelings about killing her husband. After Luke attempts to rape and kill Jo, PJ angrily heads to his house. When the others arrive they find Luke dead with an axe in the head - and PJ standing over him...

PJ refuses to explain how he came to be standing over the dead body of Luke Darcy, forcing the Homicide Squad to arrest him for murder. The other Heelers must prove his innocence and find the real killer. Meanwhile the Heelers get a surprise when Jo finds out that she has been promoted to Senior Constable, when her strips and badge come in the mail. And they also find out that Ditch is the father of Kayla's baby.

Rivalry runs rampant between Chris and her opponent in the lead up to council elections. The community is split over a decision to ban men from the pools for Muslim women-only swimming sessions.

It has been eight weeks since Tom pushed Tarni underwater, and he is now the subject of a possible murder investigation. Mark is running the station, with Tom suspended, and the new Acting Sergeant Lindy Schroder is intriguing everyone - particularly Joss. Nick is in town to help PJ investigate the case during which time they have learnt that Tarni survived Tom's attempt on her life, and claims Tom then killed Ryan and fled. Tom, however, claims, he never found Tarni, and he was shot at as he left the premises after tying Ryan up. However, Ryan's death does seem to be the work of one of them. While Joss and Jonesy are stuck investigating the arson of a set of bonsai trees, Amy investigates a video store robbery using the same rifle as the one that killed Ryan. When it leads to a friend of Ryan's and Tarni's, it seems to prove that they were involved in Ryan's death but the coroner, and lead investigator Greta Conroy, think otherwise, and Tom is formerly charged with murder.

Tom has been formerly charged with murder, and he seems unwilling to even help PJ and Nick find the truth, even though they also believe that Tarni Baxter has something that she's hiding. But when Kelly is kidnapped, they must attempt to convince Tom to help them rescue her and in doing so, prove his innocence. Meanwhile, Amy attempts to get rid of a case that is annoying her by passing it on to anyone who will take it; and Joss learns more about Lindy Schroder, who was given the position at the station because she is a friend of Mark's.

The Heelers settle into an unusual routine when Tom returns to the station and reclaims his position as Boss. While some are more willing than others to accept it, Lindy discovers that Tom is not going to make things easy for her. As it is, Tom doesn't think much of Mark, who isn't the type of cop he is interested in, and he makes things even harder for the new cop in town. While Lindy finds her job in jeopardy, PJ, Amy, Joss and Kelly find themselves investigating bizarre cases - this is no normal week in Mt. Thomas.

Tom, who is not well and is trying to hide it from his colleagues, meets an old friend who has been caught shoplifting and discovers that he was trying to please his ten-year-old daughter who is dying from leukaemia. Tom continues to refuse to see a doctor. Alex is struggling with the idea of being a father, and is further discouraged when his son, Rory, goes missing and is feared kidnapped by gunmen who've been taking shots at uniformed police officers. Finally, the Heelers find that the gunman was taking revenge on the police for the death of his son.

The Heelers are concerned about Tom's health and, despite Amy's nagging, Tom is still very reluctant to see a doctor and denies claims that he is unwell. In the midst of this, Tom becomes personally involved in the case of a young boy who is being bullied and tormented by his peers; this forces Tom to reminisce about his troubles as a child. Matt helps an old colleague of Tom's when he arrives at the station seeking help with an old case.

Tom's health is further declining and he finally gives in to Amy's persistence and opens up to her. Jonesy and Alex become mixed up in a mysterious cult after they find a baby's remains in a firepit in the national park. Alex continues to struggle with the idea of fatherhood and is further discouraged when he makes a mistake that lands Rory in hospital. An elderly man is arrested for shoplifting various items which he intends to give to his girlfriend.
