When the court finds itself in need of a public defender, Abby sees potential in an unlikely candidate from her father’s past: former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding.

Abby pushes Dan Fielding to embrace his new role as public defender. Neil gets on board with Abby's quest to improve the courtroom and quickly realizes why trying is for the birds.

Meanwhile, in the arctic rescue scenario, Dan accidentally fires a flare-gun at a small plane signalling to him; the pilot in the plane is injured (both hands broken) and thus cannot perform a critical operation. Because of that, Dan becomes the only person available who can operate on a young Eskimo woman suffering from appendicitis.

Meanwhile, Dan is actually alive, stranded with an Eskimo family and pulled into performing surgery: when the only available doctor’s hands are broken, Dan has to step in and perform an appendectomy on one of his rescuers.

A fire breaks out in the building so everyone is forced to retreat to the morgue for safety, but this doesn't stop Dan from watching the election results for his race for the state assembly.

Buddy leaves the institution and moves in with Harry while Dan and his real estate agent scheme to take over a dying man's Park Avenue apartment.

Dan plans to swindle a billionaire land developer and Mac agrees to host a cosmetics party for Quon Le.
