A seasoned traveller working remotely, she quickly fell in love with the city. We’ll explore bustling markets and spice shops, sample fresh bread and local flavours, enjoy a traditional Egyptian breakfast, and try the famous Alexandrian liver sandwich. We’ll end the day with homemade dishes and warm hospitality among Dominika’s friends.

Porto lies in northwestern Portugal along the banks of the Douro River, just before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the country’s second largest city and a historic port that has long connected Portugal to the world. Built on hills, Porto winds through narrow streets lined with colourful stone houses. The old Ribeira district reveals everyday life, while modern avenues show the city’s vibrant present. The scent of coffee, port wine, and ocean air creates a unique atmosphere that also drew Bianka from Slovakia. A graphic designer and guide, she has called Porto home for four years. Mongolia is a vast Asian country with just over 3.5 million people, making it one of the least densely populated places on Earth. Its landscape is dominated by endless steppes, with taiga forests in the north and the Gobi Desert stretching across the south. Once the heart of Genghis Khan’s empire, the largest in history, Mongolia today attracts those seeking adventure. Its raw nature and limited infrastructure feel like a journey back in time. Alena from Slovakia has called Mongolia home for over 40 years. She lives between the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and the countryside, where her husband is from, and still guides Czech and Slovak travellers. We begin in Ulaanbaatar, the world’s coldest capital, exploring its bustling market. We’ll taste roasted sheep’s head and warm milk vodka, ride into the степpe for fresh kumis, and finish with a traditional хорхог prepared on Alena’s ranch.

Osaka sits on the southwest coast of Honshu, Japan’s largest and most important island. A major economic hub, its strategic location makes it a key transportation center in the Kansai region. Today, Osaka is known for its vibrant culture, incredible food scene, and modern architecture. Diana from Slovakia has been living here for eight years, where she built a life with her family. Fluent in Japanese, she turned her passion for the language into a career as a translator and tour guide. With Diana as our guide, we’ll explore Osaka through its flavours. We’ll visit a restaurant serving traditional ramen, sample street food favourites, and, thanks to her family and friends, step inside local homes to experience true Japanese hospitality.

Samarkand is the second largest city in Uzbekistan and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. With nearly 600,000 residents, history is present at every step. Russian is still widely spoken, though Uzbek is the official language, and a strong Tajik community adds to the city’s cultural diversity. This rich environment also became home to Lucia from Slovakia, who moved here from the UK after meeting her husband Laziz. Together they run a private school for hundreds of students. With Lucia, we explore Samarkand’s flavours and traditions, visiting Siyob Bazaar for spices, silk, and ceramics, tasting fresh samsa, learning how bread is baked in a tandoor, and enjoying homemade plov.

Austin, the capital of Texas, is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, with nearly one million residents. Its skyline of modern high rises is home to major tech companies, earning it the nickname “Silicon Hills.” The city is also known for its vibrant music scene, film festivals, and the University of Texas, one of the top public universities in the country. This mix of opportunity brought Jozef from Slovakia here with his family three years ago. Together with his wife, he works to connect Slovak and American businesses. With Jozef, we experience the real Austin, from Texas barbecue and cowboy boots to rodeos and good times with friends.

Nayarit is one of Mexico’s 31 states, located along the Pacific coast and among the country’s smaller regions. Its shoreline features not only beautiful beaches popular with surfers, but also vast mangroves that are home to hundreds of bird species. Beneath the surface lies another world, one that drew Lucia from Slovakia here. Originally from Banská Štiavnica, she has dedicated her life to protecting sharks and now works with marine biologists to educate the next generation. We begin in the town of San Blas with a spicy breakfast, then switch things up by baking sweet banana bread. We discover the many ways tortillas are enjoyed, best with fresh guacamole, and head out to sea to explore the mangroves.

Kenya’s coastline stretches along the Indian Ocean from Somalia in the north to Tanzania in the south. Coastal communities rely mainly on fishing, while those inland combine it with farming. The region offers stunning landscapes and warm, welcoming people. This is what drew Daniel from Slovakia here four years ago. He works with a non profit supporting local children and has adopted three himself, seeing his work as a true calling. We begin in the coastal town of Malindi, a gateway to Kenya’s beautiful beaches. We buy fresh fish at the market, cook with friends in a nearby village, taste roasted cashews, learn about cassava farming, practice bargaining, and prepare a festive pilau together.

Colombia, in northern South America, is home to about 52 million people. Our journey takes us to the Boyacá region in the Eastern Andes, set on the high Altiplano plateau at around 2,200 metres above sea level. At its heart lies the colonial town of Villa de Leyva, a place that captured the heart of Dodo from Slovakia. He moved here 11 years ago, started a family, and now runs several guesthouses. We begin in this charming town, visiting a local market filled with unique specialties. We try traditional ajiaco soup, experience a friendly game of tejo, learn how panela is made from sugarcane, and for the brave, even taste giant ants. We end with a rich Colombian barbecue.

Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is one of the largest cities in the world. Originally founded by the Aztecs around 1325 as Tenochtitlan, it has grown into a vibrant global metropolis rich in culture and diversity. Today, it brings together people from all backgrounds, from indigenous communities to international residents. Among them is Zuzka from Slovakia, who came “just for a while” and has now lived here for 11 years. She works as a model and promoter, and her passion is Latin dance. We begin near the historic centre, where the flavours of Mexico come alive, tasting tortillas in many forms, traditional pulque, ant larvae, pozole soup, and testing our limits with spicy sauces.

Réunion Island is an overseas department of France, located about 200 kilometres southwest of Mauritius and one of the European Union’s most remote regions. With an active volcano on its southern coast, warm beaches in the west, and mountains and forests across the island, Réunion offers both adventure and relaxation. From light and dark sand beaches to turquoise waters, lagoons, coral reefs, rainforests, and waterfalls, the island is full of natural beauty. Janka from Slovakia has lived here for 14 years with her French husband. She teaches yoga, focuses on family life, and bakes for local shops. We begin with fresh French pastries, then explore Creole cuisine, taste rougail saucisse and zembrocal, and discover how local plants are used for perfumes and natural soaps.

Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, home to over 30 million people, most of whom are Christian. After centuries of colonial rule, it gained independence in 1957. Our journey takes us to the coastal town of Elmina, founded by Portuguese explorers as the first European settlement in West Africa. The historic Elmina Castle once served as a gold trading post and later became a centre of the transatlantic slave trade. Today, fishing is the main source of income, and beyond the busy towns, you’ll find peaceful beaches and a slower pace of life. This lifestyle drew Karol from Slovakia here 14 years ago. Now a pastor, he supports the local community and cares for children and the elderly. We begin at a lively fish market, taste traditional Ghanaian breakfast, and visit a nearby lagoon where sea salt is harvested.

About one third of Taiwan’s population lives in the capital, Taipei, and its surrounding metropolitan area. Founded in the early 18th century by Chinese settlers, Taipei became an important trading hub in the 19th century. Over time, control of the island shifted between different powers. Taiwan became a Chinese province in 1886, with Taipei as its capital, was later ceded to Japan, and returned to Chinese administration after World War II. Today, Taipei is a modern, densely populated city and the political, economic, and cultural centre of Taiwan. Filip from Slovakia has lived here for seven years. After studying Chinese, he stayed to work as a radio host. With Filip, we explore authentic Taiwan, from street food and home cooking to tea culture and traditional rice treats.

Kenya, located in East Africa, is one of the continent’s most populous countries, known for its diverse people and landscapes. Its climate ranges from tropical coastlines to cooler highlands and arid northern regions, while vast savannas and the Great Rift Valley offer breathtaking scenery. The central highlands, including Mount Kenya, provide ideal conditions for farming, but the true heart of the country lies in its people. This is what brought Dária from Slovakia to Kenya, where she works in humanitarian aid. She met her husband here and is now raising a family. We begin in the capital, Nairobi, visiting a local community to experience daily life. Along the way, we taste traditional dishes, tour a tea factory, and gain insight into the culture of the Maasai people.

Chiang Mai is the economic and cultural centre of northern Thailand, located in a mountainous region north of Bangkok. Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, it sits along the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya. The region is known for its unique cuisine, rich in herbs and spices, and its deep cultural traditions. This enchanting part of Thailand became a second home for Róbert from Slovakia. In 2016, he survived a near death experience here and was saved by a local woman, who later became his wife. Together, they share their life with us as we explore local farms, a coffee plantation, traditional silk making, and enjoy authentic Lanna home cooking.

Da Nang, located at the mouth of the Han River, is Vietnam’s third largest city and a key port in the central part of the country. Today, it is rapidly developing and offers a mix of modern city life and natural beauty. Its long beaches along the South China Sea, lined with modern buildings, often remind visitors of Miami. Just beyond the coastline, mountains and Buddhist temples create a striking contrast. This balance attracts many digital nomads, including Nela from Slovakia, who moved here a year ago. She hopes to build a future in tourism and enjoys the healthy, active lifestyle. The Slovene Littoral forms the western part of Slovenia along the northern Adriatic coast, bordering Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region. This coastal area blends Mediterranean charm with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Though Slovenia’s coastline is short, it offers remarkable diversity, from picturesque seaside towns to mysterious karst caves inland. Silvia, originally from Slovakia, has lived here for 13 years. She studied tourism, built a family, and fell in love with the sea and local lifestyle. We begin in Koper, the centre of Slovenia’s coast. After visiting the fishing harbour and market, we explore nearby vineyards, search for truffles, and taste local specialties, from olive oil to more adventurous dishes.

Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is located on the eastern half of the island of Timor in Southeast Asia. The country offers beautiful beaches, rugged mountains, and remarkable biodiversity. Its culture is rooted in local traditions and shaped by centuries of Portuguese influence. Tetum is the main language, though Indonesian and Portuguese are also widely spoken, reflecting the country’s rich linguistic diversity. This diversity drew Zuzana from Slovakia, a young linguist who came here to study Tetum. Fluent in five languages, she now works as a translator for a Portuguese institute and has built strong connections with the local community. We begin in the capital, Dili, where we explore the flavours and traditions of Timorese cuisine.

The Basque Country is a historic and cultural region in the western Pyrenees, spanning the border between France and Spain. The Basque people have lived here for over 30,000 years, making them one of the oldest continuous cultures in Europe. The northern part, known as Iparralde or the French Basque Country, lies within France’s Pyrénées-Atlantiques region. Around the coastal town of Biarritz, this area is known for its unique culture, cuisine, and relaxed coastal lifestyle. This is where Silvia from Slovakia has made her home for the past 25 years. She works as a coach and Shiatsu therapist, helping people grow and find balance. We begin in Bayonne, famous for its chocolate, and taste local specialties from artisan sweets and oysters to cured ham and regional cheeses.

Varanasi is a historic city in India’s Uttar Pradesh, located along the sacred Ganges River. With over 1.7 million residents, most of whom are Hindu, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a major spiritual centre. Bustling and deeply traditional, Varanasi offers a unique glimpse into India’s past and remains one of the country’s most visited destinations. This spiritual atmosphere drew Lucia from Slovakia here ten years ago. While she doesn’t live here full time, she helps run a small guesthouse with her friend Sachin. With Lucia, we explore narrow alleyways, learn about Hindu traditions from a cremation ghat caretaker, take part in a river ritual, and taste local dishes and spices.

Astana has been the modern capital of Kazakhstan since 1997. Once a stop along the ancient Silk Road, the city was founded in the 19th century and has changed its name several times over the years. Located on the Ishim River in the vast steppes of central Kazakhstan, it is the second coldest capital city in the world. Despite its harsh climate and difficult past, including periods of famine during Soviet times, Astana has seen rapid growth since the late 1990s, with new districts, parks, and striking modern architecture. Today, the city is home to over one million people. Among them is Beátka from Slovakia, who lives here with her husband as part of the Slovak diplomatic mission. After three years, she has fully embraced life in this unique city.

Kobe is the capital of Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture and one of the country’s major port cities. The region is known for its sake production and nearby hot springs, while the city itself stretches in a narrow strip between the mountains and the sea. Kobe offers scenic waterfronts, the historic Kitano district with 19th century Western style homes, and a vibrant Chinatown. It is home to about 1.5 million people, including a diverse international community. Among them is Dárius from Slovakia, who moved here eight years ago. Together with his partner Rumiko, he opened the first Slovak restaurant in Japan, where he also works as a chef.

Lombok is an Indonesian island in the Lesser Sunda Islands, located just east of Bali and west of Sumbawa. It is home to nearly four million people, with the Sasak as the dominant ethnic group. The island offers incredible diversity, from tropical beaches along the Indian Ocean and the Bali Sea to fertile farmland and Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest and still active volcano. Despite growing tourism, Lombok remains peaceful in many areas. That’s what drew Marián from Slovakia, known as Lemo, who moved here four years ago. He now focuses on environmental education for children and says he has found his true purpose on this island.

Nova Scotia is Canada’s second smallest province, located on the country’s eastern coast. First settled by the French in 1605 and later by the British, it is now home to just over one million people, nearly half of whom live in the capital, Halifax. Beyond the city, the province offers rugged coastlines, lakes, and lush green landscapes. This setting, along with love, brought Ivana from Slovakia here. After 12 years in Canada, she recently moved to her husband’s hometown. Once a chemical engineer, she now helps people reintegrate into society. After life in sunny Cyprus, she found her true sense of home in Canada.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and one of its 47 prefectures, located on the eastern coast of Honshu along Tokyo Bay. It is one of the most populous cities in the world, and the Greater Tokyo area is the largest metropolitan region on the planet. A city of the future, Tokyo blends cutting edge technology with deep rooted tradition. After years of living abroad, Ivica from Slovakia made this dynamic city her home 12 years ago. Together with her husband, a well travelled Japanese native, they are raising their young daughter here. Ivica runs a small school where she teaches English and helps children develop a positive connection to art.

Alberta is the fourth largest province in Canada, with Edmonton as its capital and Calgary as its largest city. It is one of the country’s wealthiest regions, thanks to vast oil and natural gas reserves, along with a strong cattle industry. For visitors, however, the biggest draw is the stunning Rocky Mountains. Despite the harsh natural conditions, it’s the people who make this place truly special. That’s what captured Darinka from Slovakia, who now lives here with her husband Bart, a local pastor and writer. Together, they are raising three children and supporting their community in the town of Cochrane. With Darinka, we head to Calgary for the famous Stampede rodeo, explore the beauty of the Rockies, and taste local specialties like bison steaks and even bear sausage.

Yogyakarta is the capital of a special region in Indonesia, located in central Java at the foot of a volcano. It is the only place in the country where a ruling sultan still holds power, blending tradition with modern life. Tourism is growing rapidly here, supported by expanding infrastructure and a vibrant cultural scene. Lukáš from Slovakia arrived 12 years ago to study international business and decided to stay. He built a fair trade project focused on coffee and local spices, creating a second home in Indonesia. Together with his fiancée, he now supports both the business and the development of local farming communities.

Hainan is China’s southernmost island province, often called the “Hawaii of China.” Known for its tropical coastline, rainforests, hot springs, and modern infrastructure, it has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors. This island paradise also attracted Jano from Slovakia, who settled here after 20 years of traveling the world. He now teaches English, stays active in sports, and continues learning Chinese. In the capital, Haikou, we explore a local market, taste traditional noodle soups, and visit a volcanic stone village where we help make a local rice dessert. The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located about 740 kilometres southwest of Sri Lanka. While its white sand beaches and turquoise waters are world famous, some of its most stunning beauty lies beneath the surface. This incredible environment drew Petra from Slovakia here five years ago. Together with her partner Ivan, they built a small eco friendly resort. Both are passionate divers, and Petra also works as a professional yoga instructor, finding perfect balance in this island setting. We taste local street food, breadfruit chips, and homemade ice cream, then cook tuna curry right on the beach. Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Central Africa, named after the Zambezi River. Set on a high plateau, it is one of Africa’s most water rich countries, with vast lakes, major rivers, waterfalls, and wetlands. Angelika from Slovakia has called Zambia home for seven years. After meeting her husband in London, she settled here, where she now teaches art at a local school and raises her three children. We begin in the capital, Lusaka, tasting roasted goat, dried tilapia, and a drink made from baobab. Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina, is known for its rich culture, vibrant lifestyle, and high quality of life. It gave the world iconic figures like writer Jorge Luis Borges and football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. Twelve years ago, this city also became home to Elena from Slovakia, who moved here for love. Today, she lives here with her family and works as a translator, while enjoying music and travel. Piedmont is a region in northwestern Italy, with Turin, a city over 2,000 years old, as its capital. It is known for outstanding wines, unique cuisine, and its own distinct dialect. This is where Adriana from Slovakia found both love and a new home 18 years ago. Today, she works as an export manager for Italian family wineries and has built her life here. Piedmont is famous for its rich culinary tradition, from tajarin pasta and world renowned cheeses to prized truffles and hazelnuts. Join us as we explore and taste this exceptional corner of Italy.

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, lies off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. It is famous for its unique wildlife, from colourful chameleons and rare orchids to towering baobab trees, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. This natural beauty, especially its underwater world, drew Adrián from Slovakia here several years ago. He now lives on the small island of Nosy Komba, where he runs a boutique hotel and works as a diving instructor. Nearby on Nosy Be, we visit ylang-ylang plantations, enjoy local street food, catch and taste fresh fish, try traditional rice cake, and see how Madagascar’s famous vanilla is harvested and dried.

Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world, known for its vast rainforests, including the Amazon, and incredible cultural diversity shaped by its people. From music and cuisine to football and the world famous Rio Carnival, Brazil is full of energy and colour. This vibrant lifestyle brought Ivana from Slovakia to the state of São Paulo, where she now lives in the coastal town of Caraguatatuba with her Brazilian husband. After years in China, she found a new home here and works as a tour guide and translator. With Ivana, we start the day at a local café, pick fresh jackfruit for lunch, visit a Quilombo community to make cassava flour, taste Brazilian style sushi by the beach, and end the day dancing as we prepare for carnival.

Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, lies in the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its year round mild climate and diverse landscapes. Three years ago, Dalibor from Slovakia made this island his home, drawn by life by the sea and a new opportunity. A talented chef who spent 12 years in Latin America, he later accepted an offer to open his own restaurant here. Today, he lives on Tenerife with his family and continues to build his culinary success. We begin in the capital, Santa Cruz, where a local market reveals the island’s flavours. We visit a traditional mill producing gofio, explore a cactus farm, taste local wine, and enjoy grilled specialties prepared by Dalibor himself.

Uganda, known as the Pearl of Africa, lies in the eastern part of the continent within the Nile basin and has a largely equatorial climate. While rich in untapped oil and natural gas reserves, coffee remains its main export. Despite being landlocked, nearly a quarter of the country is covered by water. Biba, a doctor from Slovakia, has been living in Uganda since 2010, where she runs a non profit organization and leads a clinic for HIV patients. Her dedication and compassion help her stay positive despite challenging conditions. Through Biba, we experience local life and culture, taste traditional foods like posho, fresh peanuts, and sambusas, share tea with the community, and join a local nutrition workshop.

Split is the main city of the Split Dalmatia region, known for its vibrant tourism, coastline, mountains, vineyards, and olive groves. With an airport, a major port, and a rich history, it is considered one of the oldest cities in the world and a key cultural centre of Dalmatia. Our guide is Jaro, a 68 year old who proudly calls himself a Dalmatian. Originally from Slovakia, he studied civil engineering in Žilina and spent years working abroad before settling in Split nine years ago. Together with his wife Lydka, he has embraced life by the sea. Through their eyes, we explore Dalmatian cuisine, centred around fresh fish, seafood, and lamb. We also try local specialties such as frogs and prepare traditional dishes like soparnik and burek.

Today we travel to Australia, the only country that is also a continent, located in the Southern Hemisphere. Our destination is the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, a coastal region known for its relaxed lifestyle and natural beauty. Home to nearly 400,000 people, the area enjoys a humid subtropical climate, with warm temperatures even during the Australian winter. Its greatest attraction is the coastline, where locals spend much of their free time on stunning beaches. The population is diverse, with European roots alongside communities from Asia, the Americas, and Indigenous Australians. Among them is Jakub from Slovakia, who moved here seven years ago after living in the United Kingdom. He has built a family and now works in construction, proudly calling this place home. Together, we visit a local fish market, try a unique donut coffee, learn about wagyu farming, and taste classic Australian meat pies.

Palau is a Pacific island nation in Micronesia, made up of around 340 islands and home to about 20,000 people. Settled thousands of years ago by migrants from Southeast Asia, it is known today for its strong focus on environmental protection, even as tourism remains a key part of its economy. After World War II, Palau came under U.S. administration and later entered a compact of free association. English and Palauan are the official languages, and the U.S. dollar is used throughout the country. On the island of Koror, we meet Danka from Slovakia, who has lived here for sixteen years and teaches at the local university. She also co founded a nonprofit supporting children’s education and development. Together, we explore island life, learn about marine ecosystems, and try local dishes, from taro leaf soup to the island’s more unusual culinary traditions.

Our journey takes us to Maui, the second largest island in Hawaii. The western part is shaped by the West Maui Mountains, while the east is dominated by the dormant volcano Haleakalā, rising over 3,000 metres above sea level. Maui’s tropical climate is surprisingly diverse, ranging from dry, savanna like landscapes to lush rainforests and even cooler conditions at higher elevations. The island is also famous for surfing, with Pacific waves drawing visitors from around the world. One of them is Eva from Slovakia, who arrived ten years ago in search of spirituality and found a new home and family here. Today, she organizes weddings and events, fully embracing island life. We begin in Lahaina, exploring local markets, tasting fresh Hawaiian poke, visiting a dragon fruit farm, and learning to make traditional flower leis.

Today we travel to the heart of the Pacific Ocean, to the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. This vast region spans an area comparable to Western Europe, yet its total landmass is just 885 square kilometres, made up of coral atolls. Our destination is Rangiroa, one of the largest atolls in the world. Rangiroa consists of over 400 small islets, known as motu, and is home to nearly 3,000 people. It is connected to Tahiti by air, while boats can enter its lagoon only through two narrow passes. With supplies arriving by sea just once a week, prices here are noticeably higher, but the island’s beauty more than makes up for it. This peaceful place also became home to Kristína from Slovakia, who moved here with her husband five years ago. A photographer by profession, she now lives her dream surrounded by the ocean, capturing a world she has always been drawn to.

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France in Oceania, spread across a vast area where its most distant islands lie more than 2,000 kilometres apart. Made up of small islands and atolls, it is home to nearly 280,000 people, with most living on Tahiti, where the capital Papeete is located. Tahiti is a volcanic island and the highest point in French Polynesia. Despite being relatively populated, its interior still offers untouched and uninhabited landscapes. In the early 20th century, San Francisco was nearly destroyed by a devastating earthquake and the fires that followed, but it was rebuilt and transformed. Today, it stands as one of the most beautiful and recognizable cities in the country, known for its stunning views, unique character, and rich history.

Nicaragua is a Central American country located in the heart of the isthmus, within the tropical zone. It is known for its large lakes, active volcanoes, and long stretches of coastline. Tourism plays a key role in the economy, with the colonial city of Granada among the most popular destinations. Nicaraguan culture reflects a blend of Spanish and indigenous influences, something that deeply fascinated Veronika from Slovakia. After years in the corporate world, she chose to leave everything behind and start a new chapter here, seeking a slower pace of life and a deeper sense of balance. Together, we explore this vibrant country, tasting traditional gallo pinto for breakfast, preparing fresh ceviche from local seafood, and grinding cacao beans to make authentic cocoa.

Today we head to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest city, set along the shores of Guanabara Bay near the Tropic of Capricorn. According to legend, early explorers believed the bay was the mouth of a river, giving the city its name, “January River.” Founded by the Portuguese in 1565, Rio still reflects its colonial roots, while today it is a vibrant metropolis of over 13 million people. Known for its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, stunning views, and world famous beaches, Rio is the country’s most visited destination. With its tropical climate, life here often revolves around the ocean, sun, and football. This lively atmosphere drew Katarína from Slovakia, who moved here ten years ago. Now working as a tour guide, she introduces us to the real Rio, from the famous Rocinha favela to local flavours like caipirinha and Brazilian steak, and even a journey through nearby mangroves.

India covers a large part of South Asia and is the second most populous country in the world. It is home to an incredibly diverse population, with thousands of ethnic groups, many religions, and hundreds of languages. The country is a federal republic made up of 28 states, with Goa being the smallest. Once a Portuguese colony, Goa was part of the Portuguese Empire for centuries before becoming part of India in 1961. Today, it is one of the country’s most prosperous regions, known for its tropical climate, lush greenery, and relaxed coastal lifestyle. With around 1.5 million residents, Goa attracts both visitors and those seeking a different way of life. Among them is Tomáš from Bratislava, who settled in India after years of travelling. He spends his summers in the mountains and winters by the sea in Goa, living a creative life connected to music and jewellery making.

Peru lies on the western coast of South America and is one of the continent’s largest countries. Our journey, however, takes us high into the Andes, to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire and one of the most important cities in the region. Cusco is layered with history, from the early Killke culture to the Inca civilization, and later Spanish colonial influence built upon its foundations. Today, the city is home to around half a million people, and its narrow streets are filled with a deep sense of the past. This unique atmosphere drew Gabriel from Košice ten years ago. He fell in love with Cusco at first sight, began working in gastronomy, and now runs a small pizzeria on the edge of the city. Passionate about honest cooking, he believes great dough takes time and care, much like the life he has built here.

Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America, located between Argentina and Brazil. Although early settlers were Portuguese, the official language is Spanish. The country has a temperate climate, with mild, often windy winters and warm summers. After centuries of colonization, Uruguay gained independence in 1828. Today, it is known for its Atlantic coastline, historic districts, strong cattle farming tradition, and deep passion for football. Its capital, Montevideo, is often ranked among the best cities in Latin America for quality of life, with a rich cultural scene. This relaxed and progressive country attracted Ivan from Slovakia, who arrived four years ago after living in India, Spain, and Argentina. He now works in a non profit focused on technology and has built a new life and family in Uruguay.

Vieques is a small island in Puerto Rico, home to around 9,000 people, with an economy now largely built on tourism. In the past, it was known for sugarcane production and later served as a U.S. Navy base until 2003. After the military left, parts of the island remained affected by unexploded ordnance, and some areas are still being cleared today. Despite this history, Vieques is famous for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, attracting visitors as well as those seeking a quieter island lifestyle. One of them is Katarína from Slovakia, who moved to the United States over twenty years ago. After working as a teacher in New York, she settled on Vieques eleven years ago. Together with her husband Jimmy, a passionate chef, they run a restaurant where we discover the island through its flavours, from roasted pork and grilled lobster to fresh tropical fruit.

Meghalaya is a small state in northeastern India, bordering Assam to the north and Bangladesh to the south. Its capital, Shillong, is often called the “Scotland of the East,” known for its lush greenery, waterfalls, and unique living root bridges. The region is famous for heavy rainfall, with warm summers and cooler winters, and is home to a rich mix of cultures, ethnic groups, and religions. Shillong also serves as the gateway to exploring the natural beauty of Meghalaya. Among its residents is Janka from Slovakia, an artist who came to India ten years ago to study at an art academy. She met her husband Alakesh, a musician from Assam, and together they work on creative and environmental projects, drawing inspiration from the region’s remarkable landscape.

Nepal is an Asian country bordering India to the southeast and west, and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north. Its natural boundary is formed by the Himalayas, home to eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest. The Himalayas are the country’s greatest attraction for visitors, and tourism represents one of Nepal’s main sources of income. The official language is Nepali, a blend of Sanskrit and indigenous languages. The capital city, Kathmandu, lies at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level beneath the majestic Himalayas. The city itself is home to approximately 900,000 people, while nearly three million live in the greater metropolitan area. It was precisely these extraordinary people and breathtaking mountains that drew Dorota from Slovakia to Nepal. Dorota first came to Nepal in 2006, and it was love at first sight.

Burundi is a small landlocked country in East Africa, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and bordering Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. With a population of around 12.5 million, it has two capitals, Gitega as the administrative centre and Bujumbura as the economic hub. The population is mainly made up of Hutu, followed by Tutsi and the indigenous Twa. Much of the land is used for agriculture, which supports most livelihoods. Despite a difficult past marked by conflict, the country feels surprisingly green and full of life. This first impression also captivated Zolo from Slovakia, who arrived ten years ago to work in humanitarian aid. Although he now lives back home with his family, Burundi remains close to his heart, and he continues to return to support projects across the region.

Zanzibar is an autonomous region off the eastern coast of Africa which, together with mainland Tanganyika, forms the state of Tanzania. It consists mainly of the islands of Unguja and Pemba and is home to more than one million inhabitants. Tanzania as a whole is considered one of the most peaceful countries in East Africa. Zanzibar has a typically island climate—tropical and humid—with reliable and relatively well-distributed rainfall compared to much of East Africa. Today, the islands are predominantly inhabited by the Swahili ethnic group, and local people are generally known for their friendly and relaxed nature. With its picture-perfect beaches, sunny weather, and rich culture, Zanzibar is a favorite destination for travelers from around the world. These very qualities are also what drew Janka from Trebišov and her partner Dávid to settle here permanently. Janka works remotely for Slovakia and is learning Swahili. Welcome to the island!

By population, Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria. Located in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, this major port city could easily rival others in the country in terms of its size and importance. Varna lies on the Varna Bay, just a short distance from the famous Golden Sands resort. It is precisely this close connection to the sea that attracted Marián from Bratislava and Nansi, a Bulgarian from the inland region. Marián has studied and worked abroad since the age of eighteen. A former ice hockey player and trained lawyer, he speaks five languages, but his greatest passion today is running his own food truck business. He met Nansi while working on a river cruise ship, and their shared love eventually brought them to a new place for both of them – Varna. Varna is one of the most cosmopolitan cities along the coast. It is a popular holiday destination that warmly welcomes visitors, and this time, we were invited to experience it ourselves.

Montenegro is a country in the western Balkans, at the southern edge of the Dinaric Alps. Its administrative capital is Podgorica, while the historic city of Cetinje remains an important cultural centre. After being part of Yugoslavia for much of the 20th century, Montenegro became fully independent in 2006. The country is home to a diverse population, with Montenegrins making up less than half, alongside other ethnic groups that shape its unique identity. This mix is now joined by Igor from Slovakia, who moved to the coastal town of Bar last year after years abroad and plans to stay for good. Igor is learning his tenth language and runs his own transport design studio. He also enjoys the warm climate, the sea, good food, and wine. Together, we taste local favourites like burek, lamb, honey, and regional wines, all set against Montenegro’s stunning natural landscape.

Slovenia, located at the crossroads of major European cultural and trade routes, is largely mountainous, especially in its northern regions. The part of the Alpine massif that extends into Slovenian territory belongs to the Julian Alps. The Slovenian Alps owe their distinctive charm mainly to white limestone, which gives the treeless mountain peaks their unusually pale color and turns the rivers a striking azure blue. In this beautiful area, close to the Austrian border and only about 15 kilometers from Slovenia’s highest peak, Mount Triglav (2,864 m), Gabika has been living and working with her partner for eight years in the small mountain village of Dovje. Gabika is a mountain hut keeper, and her lodge is a typical Slovenian Alpine house more than a hundred years old. If you love mountains, prefer not to travel far, and enjoy tasting local specialties, Slovenia is definitely worth discovering.

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies in the southern part of the country and is home to a mix of Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats. Known as the “Jerusalem of Europe,” the city reflects a unique blend of cultures and religions, with architectural landmarks shaped by centuries of diverse influences. Our guide is Patrik, a young and successful diplomat, who introduces us to the flavours and everyday life of the city. We visit his favourite ćevabdžinica, taste freshly baked somun bread, and enjoy a locally brewed beer. Outside the city, we try fresh kajmak cheese on a farm and pick pomegranates in a nearby orchard. Back in Sarajevo, we sit down for traditional Bosnian coffee in Baščaršija and share a home cooked meal of Bosanski lonac. To close, Patrik shows us a local initiative that provides food to those in need, highlighting the strong sense of community and compassion shaped by the country’s past.

Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali. Over the centuries, the city was shaped by Arabs, Persians, Turks, and later became part of the Russian Empire in 1801. Each left a mark on its culture, and after gaining independence in 1991, Tbilisi became the capital of Georgia. Today, it is the country’s cultural and economic centre, home to nearly 1.2 million people, many of whom have moved here from rural areas. Tbilisi is a city of diversity, where different influences come together, including that of Michaela, a Slovak who has made her place in this vibrant capital.

Tanzania is an East African country on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Formed by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, it gained independence in 1964 after periods of German and British rule. The country is home to around 55 million people across more than 120 ethnic groups, with a mix of Islam, Christianity, and traditional beliefs. Its landscape is dominated by high plains, vast savannas, and iconic national parks filled with wildlife and ancient baobab trees. Tanzania is also home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, and is often called the cradle of humanity due to important archaeological discoveries. This rich cultural diversity drew Lucia from Orava, who has been volunteering at a local school for the past year. She was captivated by the country’s authenticity and natural way of life.

Côte d’Ivoire, often known in English as Ivory Coast, is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea. Once under French rule until gaining independence in 1960, it is now home to nearly 24 million people and more than 60 ethnic groups, each with its own culture and traditions. While the official capital is Yamoussoukro, the true cultural and economic heart of the country is Abidjan, a vibrant city where diverse communities live side by side. Alongside local ethnic groups, you will also find strong French and Lebanese influences shaping daily life. Here we meet Simona from Piešťany, who moved here four years ago with her husband from Belgium. Together they are raising their young son, and she hopes to pursue a career in shoe design. Our journey begins in the lively streets of Abidjan, full of energy, colour, and everyday life.

Martinique is a beautiful Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles, with a unique blend of tropical nature and French influence. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, it offers both stunning landscapes and modern infrastructure. With nearly 400,000 residents, its capital Fort-de-France became the main city after a volcanic eruption destroyed Saint-Pierre in 1902. Today, the island combines Caribbean charm with a European standard of living. Many visitors are welcomed by Maggie, a Slovak from Svätý Jur, who came to study French and stayed to work in tourism. She even wrote an English guidebook about the island. We begin in Fort-de-France, where colonial architecture meets seaside views, and enjoy breakfast at a small local bakery that captures the island’s flavour and spirit.

Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, known for its rugged coastline as well as its beautiful beaches. The island’s interior is shaped by mountains and rainforests, while sugarcane plantations once played a key role in its economy. Today, tourism accounts for a large share of the country’s income. With a hot and humid tropical climate, Jamaica’s weather was the first thing that captured Anita from Kováčová. Over time, the local culture won her over, and she decided to make the island her home. We begin our journey in the capital, Kingston, a vibrant city shaped by generations of immigrants. Despite their diverse roots, everyone here shares one thing in common, a strong pride in being Jamaican.

Today we visit the beautiful island of Taiwan, surrounded by the East China Sea and the South China Sea. Stretching less than 400 km from north to south, it offers excellent infrastructure, including a high speed train that connects the island in under ninety minutes. Taiwan is home to over 23 million people, with a diverse population made up of several ethnic groups. The climate shifts from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south, with cooler mountain regions where it can even snow in winter. This diversity allows for a rich variety of crops, from tropical fruit to mountain grown tea. The island’s openness, cuisine, and natural beauty drew Aleš, a photographer from Slovakia, who has been living here for the past three years.

Bali lies at the western edge of the Lesser Sunda Islands, between Java and Lombok, in Indonesia. Surrounded by the Java Sea to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south, this tropical island is known for its lush greenery shaped by frequent rainfall. With around 3.5 million residents, Bali is unique in Indonesia for its predominantly Hindu population. The island is defined by rainforest, vibrant rice terraces, and temples built from dark volcanic stone, reflecting its location in one of the world’s most active volcanic regions. Its beauty draws millions of visitors each year, and some choose to stay. Among them are two Slovaks, Danica and Olívia, who met here. Danica has lived on the island for nineteen years, raising a Slovak Balinese son, while Olívia arrived recently and quickly fell in love with the island. Both now work in tourism and know Bali inside out.

Today we visit Kuala Lumpur, the capital and largest city of Malaysia. Located at the meeting point of the Gombak and Klang rivers, its name reflects its origins as a “muddy confluence.” The city has about 1.8 million residents, with over 7 million in the greater metropolitan area. Kuala Lumpur is a truly cosmopolitan hub, where Malays make up less than half the population, alongside strong Chinese and Indian communities. Once a small mining town, it has grown into a modern city known for its skyline and green parks. One of its residents is Marek from Svidník, who arrived recently after years working across Asia as a respected bartender. Now a trainer and sales manager in the cocktail industry, he explores the city with his Mexican wife Lula, sharing their passion for travel and discovering new flavours.

Today we travel to Oman, located in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. It borders the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. The country has around three million people, with Arabs forming the majority, alongside communities from South Asia and Africa. Most residents are Muslim. Oman is a monarchy led by a modernizing Sultan, with Arabic as the official language, though English is widely spoken. The landscape ranges from humid coastal areas to hot, dry desert interiors. It was this warm climate and unique setting that drew Zuzana, a marketing manager from Poprad, eight years ago. She was so captivated by Oman that she decided to make it her permanent home.

Europe’s culinary paradise can be found in Tuscany, one of Italy’s most celebrated regions. With Florence as its capital, this land of rolling hills is shaped by vineyards producing Chianti, along with olive groves and cypress lined roads. Once the heart of the Renaissance, Tuscany is filled with masterpieces by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Donatello, found in museums, churches, and towns across the region. Its cuisine is built on simple, high quality ingredients, from wild boar and steaks to white truffles and the rich harvest of local produce. This lifestyle, culture, and food drew Mária from Bratislava here fourteen years ago. Today, she shows us why Tuscany is a place to savour with all the senses.

The population is mainly Moldovan, alongside Ukrainian and Russian communities. Moldova is largely a landscape of open plains, where time seems to stand still. Though it sees few tourists, visitors are welcomed with genuine warmth. The culture reflects a blend of Romanian roots and influences from the former Soviet Union, while many people outside cities still live closely connected to nature. This quiet authenticity is what drew Emil from Košice seventeen years ago. He found a second home here, captivated by a country that remains largely undiscovered.

Tomáš, originally from eastern Slovakia, has fully embraced life in multicultural São Paulo, where he also met his wife. Together, they guide us through the city’s vibrant street food scene and host a lively Brazilian barbecue. We experience the energy of a night carnival, something Tomáš loves for its atmosphere. While São Paulo is often seen as a concrete jungle, it also reveals surprising contrasts, from pockets of rainforest to streets designed without cars. Mária is 71 years old and a remarkable guide who proves that age is just a number. She has lived in Bolivia for over forty years, and her heart belongs to La Paz, where she shares her life with her close friend Marta. Mária takes us above the city on the cable car system used as everyday public transport, and guides us through La Paz’s vibrant markets, including those filled with amulets and traditional remedies. We sample bold local specialties, from cow udder to street grilled offal, considered true delicacies here. Matej left his business in Bratislava behind and moved to the Mexico he had always loved. After training in local kitchens, he now runs his own bistro in the coastal town of Tulum, set along the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. With Matej as our guide, we spend a day in a Mayan village, helping prepare pork in a traditional underground oven and learning about their sophisticated farming methods. Namibia is considered one of the more developed countries in Africa, and it is where Martina, a teacher, has made her home. She works at a local university and has built strong connections with the community she now loves. Through her local friends, we visit families from two indigenous tribes and prepare their traditional meals, where staple dishes often centre around different types of porridge. We also step outside our comfort zone and try preparing edible worms. From stunning safaris and breathtaking nature to the realities of life shaped by wider challenges, Namibia reveals many layers. We even get up close with cheetahs and experience the local nightlife, offering a unique and diverse glimpse into this remarkable country.

Zuzana, a mother of two, moved from Bratislava to South Africa with her Italian husband in search of a better academic environment for their autistic son, and they have never looked back. In a city shaped by contrasts of wealth and poverty, she follows her passion by working with local charities, while also introducing us to food projects that help bridge these divides. We visit a unique botanical garden and venture into one of the city’s toughest areas, where a well known spot serves freshly grilled meats straight from the butcher, with a local DJ setting the mood. We also head out to catch fresh lobster and explore nearby vineyards, discovering a region full of contrast, flavour, and resilience.

Katarína from Bratislava has two children and has been living in Cyprus for over ten years. Thanks to her extended Cypriot family, we uncover a cuisine full of hidden traditions and flavours. On the way back from a snail farm, we visit a Czech friend who is now co owner of a luxury champagne house, where the drink flows as freely as water. Eva learns how to prepare croissant dough, and together they invite us into a French home for a shared cooking experience. The Netherlands may be known for tulips, windmills, and wooden clogs, but there is much more to discover. The likeable Rastislav has a mother from Madrid, but years ago his heart remained in the green region of the Basque Country. In a land with what is considered the best Spanish cuisine, we will personally experience how apple cider, sidra, is poured from two meters directly into a glass—traditionally enjoyed with an amazing four-centimeter-thick steak. We will show that Spanish tapas are merely a playful kindergarten version compared to Basque pintxos, and we will unexpectedly drop in on the crew of a fishing boat right in the middle of their lunch. In the third episode, we will visit the magnificent city of Shanghai in China. We will personally meet the Suchánek couple (Michal and Zuzana), who have been living there for four years and are successfully working in their field—architecture. Together, they will show us the modern metropolis of China and introduce us to local gastronomic highlights. Thanks to their conversational Chinese, we will experience authentic situations in shops and restaurants. As respected architects, they will talk not only about food but also about their impressions of the city and will show us two interesting interiors of unique restaurants. In addition to Shanghai cuisine, we will also taste a Chinese recipe from a dormitory kitchen prepared by their good neighbor, as well as southern Chinese cuisine, which is similar to Arabic food.
